Abstract

Nano-technology is a science in which materials are manipulated at nano-scale. Nano-technology stands central position among recent technological advancements worldwide. Nano-science and Nano-technology have relatively recent applications in agriculture and food sector as compared with their use in pharmaceuticals and drug delivery. Nano-technology can be a solution for several complex challenges of food and bioprocessing industries to manufacture safe and high quality food by efficient and sustainable means. Its applications include: biosensors for quality monitoring, nanoencapsulation of bioactive food compounds, bacteria identification, bioseperation of proteins and intelligent, active, and smart food packaging systems. The applications of nanotechnology to the food sector bring a wide range of benefits including, less use of fat, increased range of food textures and sensation, increased efficiency of liquid filters, enhanced absorption of nutrients, new colours and tastes, cooking oil catalysation, traceability, improved packaging and security of food products.
