Abstract
The Islamic commandments regarding the permissibility and impermissibility of something are divine, which _ according to the authentic faith of the Muslims _ cannot be changed by any human. In the modern industrial and scientific era, the identification of Halal (permissible) and Haram (impermissible) ingredients used in food products is a big Challenge for Muslims. Its clear example is the issue identifying ingredients labeled E-Numbers.
All such ingredients are used in the production of food items, Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals without any distinction of Halal and Haram. Therefore, it is the dire need of the time to assess these E-Numbers_ particularly the doubtful ones _ in the light of the principles given by the Islamic jurists. Besides, it is also obligatory to illustrate their sharia status. In this study, the analytical and comparative methods will be used in which the ingredients of all the critical ingredients (like Gelatin, Glycerin and Cochineal etc.) will be evaluated. The jurists’ opinion will be discussed in detail. Besides that change of state and customary practice (Umoom-e-Balwa) will also be analyzed in this study to elaborate the lawfulness and unlawfulness of the critical ingredients.
